Pregnancy Associated Thrombotic Microangiopathies: What’s New? (#15)

Kathy Paizis

Thrombotic microangiopathies (TMAs) represent a spectrum of disorders characterised by thrombocytopenia microangiopathic haemolytic anaema and end organ damage (Laurence et al 2016). Differentiation between TMAs, although clinically challenging, is critical for maternal and foetal outcomes as these are conditions with significant morbidity and mortality (Thomas et al 2016). Considerable developments have been made in recent years to further the medical community’s understanding of TMAs, particularly in the setting of pregnancy. (Thomas et al 2016). This symposium aims to provide attendees with the most recent understanding and approach to differential diagnosis and management of TMA in the pregnancy & post-partum settings, giving insights specifically into pre-eclampsia, HELLP, TTP and atypical Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome (aHUS) (Bruel et al 2017, Huerta et al 2017).
